SB 123 A Bill in Support of the Pilipin@ American Alliance’s 37th Annual Pilipin@ Cultural Night

On March 20th, 2013, SB 123, A Bill in Support of the Pilipin@ American Alliance’s 37th Annual Pilipin@ Cultural Night was unanimously passed in the ASUC Senate. This bill was authored by the PCN Producers (Vince Albano, Marie Artap, and Angelo Macaraeg) and the Finance Managers of the Pilipin@ American Alliance (Justin Bauzone & Fia Castillo) and with the guidance of Senator Deejay Pepito.

This bill introduces the constant struggles of Pilipin@s in self-representation and PAA’s efforts in trying to break down those barriers. And so, the importance of Pilipin@ Cultural Night is outlined in the contents of the bill. Thirty-seven years ago, Pilipin@ American Alliance became the first student group on campus to have a showcase at the world-renowned stage, Zellerbach Hall. And since then, the annual PCN has been produced in order to provide a creative and expressive space for Pilipin@s to “showcase and engage with various aspects of indigenous, Pilipin@ and Pilipin@-American culture.” To accomplish such a feat, the Pil-Community comes together in a unified effort just to make sure that a show is made for the Pilipin@s greater Berkeley community.

This year, PCN is taking a new direction with the production and process of the actual show. Instead of having several vignette style skits, the producers and writers have come together and tried to embody this year’s theme of Renewal. The production will be a full-fledge play/musical that is completely student and alumni written–making it a collaborative effort by the community for the community.

One thing that hasn’t changed however, is the fact that Pilipin@ Cultural Night has affected the lives of different community members. With such an intimate production process, there are people who have really taken a lot from their involvement in PCN. Two members of the PCN Cast and Creative Team gave their testimonials in front of the ASUC Senate on Wednesday and expressed why Pilipin@ Cultural Night is important to them

“PCN is an important avenue to sustain our history, our current community, and the future presence of the Pilipin@ community on this campus. When our histories are excluded and forgotten in textbooks and classrooms, PCN provides an alternative outlet. The passing of this bill not only enables us to develop and maintain our community’s visibility, but it honors the lived-experiences of those that came before. Thank you for all your hard work Senator Pepito!”

Tesha Laurente, Acting Director and Actress

“Before I came to UC Berkeley, I attended a performing arts high school, and I was determined to pursue my passions of acting and singing all the way into college. However, I gradually became disheartened as I noticed the underrepresentation of Filipinos in the media and on stage. I came to college not wanting anything to do with the performing arts, completely hopeless. But when I decided to intern for PAA (Pilipino American Alliance), I was placed in the PCN component – and I’m so thankful that I was. PCN has brought me back to my Filipino roots and has allowed me to represent myself as an artist and as a member of a community. The passing of the PCN bill is so important not only to the Filipino community, but anyone who values self-expression, representation, and unity. Through its passing, the PCN Bill has given us the opportunity to foster these values, and communicate them to the greater UC Berkeley community and beyond.”

Nicole Arca, PCNtern & Actress

The passing of the bill is a big event for the Pilipin@ Community as it does two things. One result is the sponsorship of Pilipin@ Cultural Night by the ASUC Senate and more importantly their recognition of its importance to the community and for Pilipin@s in general. The other is the allocation of $1,500 from the Senate Contingency Fund to the Pilipin@ American Alliance to help pay for the costs of Pilipin@ Cultural Night.
